Gare Joyce of SportsNet: The Panthers No. 1 pick might be available, but they won’t move it for anything along the lines of the rumored Maple Leafs No. 8, Jake Gardiner and Nazem Kadri. The Leafs would then draft Aaron Ekblad.

No. 1 pick+Campbell, cserébe No. 8 pick, Kadri, Gardiner és Phaneuf.

The Edmonton Oilers have hired former Panthers assistant coach Craig Ramsay to fill the same role.

Ramsay, 63, worked under Kevin Dineen from 2011 to 2013, running the Panthers’ power play. He’ll likely continue in that role in Edmonton.

Ramsay, a former defenseman who played 14 years with the Buffalo Sabres, is famously the last head coach of the Atlanta Thrashers.

Sok sikert!

Pl ez nem tűnik rossznak:

Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Kuzma wonders if the Panthers would be interested in re-acquiring defenseman Jason Garrison. They will have lots of salary cap room after they sign their restricted free agents and they could use some help on the blueline. Would Garrison waive his no-trade clause? Would a Garrison and the 6th overall pick get the 1st overall pick?

Jó volt nálunk, szívesen viszontlátnám FLA mezben.

Vagy húzzuk be Ekblad-ot!

Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: If the Panthers don’t get an offer they like for the first overall pick, they could be leaning towards Aaron Ekblad as he may be the most NHL ready player projected to be in the top four.

“Ekblad is this year’s player most likely ready to step in and play in the NHL,” Scott Luce, the Panthers director of scouting, told the Sun Sentinel last week. “He’s physically mature and has got lots of mileage underneath him at the OHL level.”

One option out there is Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green. The 28-year old Calgary native was one of the premiere scoring defenders in the league at one time, becoming one of eight defensemen to score 30-goals in a season.

Scoring 73-points (including 31-goals) in 68-games during the 2008-2009 season earned him a Norris Trophy nomination. He best that total the following year with 76-points before seeing a major dip in production when he couldn’t stay healthy.

In the years since his drop in points he has slowly regained his numbers but his defensive game has prevented him from reaching the level he was once was to the point where the Caps may be looking to unload the defender and his $6.083 cap hit.

Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon received permission Monday morning from his Montreal Canadiens counterpart, Marc Bergevin, to speak with Canadiens assistant coach Gerard Gallant about the Panthers' vacant coaching position, according to several media reports.

Gallant left Montreal for South Florida on Sunday, according to RDS, but the request for permission from Bergevin to negotiate with Gallant came from Tallon on Monday morning.

Tallon fired interim coach Peter Horachek at the end of the regular season after the Panthers went 26-36-4 under his watch. Horachek had replaced Kevin Dineen on Nov. 8, inheriting a team that had started the season 3-9-4.

Tallon mentioned at the time he fired Horachek that he was looking for someone with NHL coaching experience after Horachek, Dineen and Peter DeBoer were first-time NHL coaches when they were hired by the Panthers.

Gallant would meet that wish, having coached the Columbus Blue Jackets for 142 games from the 2003-04 season to 2006-07, compiling a record of 56-76-6 with four ties. Gallant has been an assistant coach with the Canadiens since June 15, 2012, joining the team after a highly successful stint coaching the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Florida Panthers Executive Vice President and General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to an entry-level contract with C Steven Hodges.

Hodges, 20, played in 52 regular season games for the Victoria Royals (Western Hockey League) this season, collecting 47 points (21-26-47) and a +20 rating. The center added a team-high 10 points (4-6-10) in nine playoff games.

The Yellowknife, NWT native has recorded 157 points (75-82-157) in 247 games with Chilliwack (2009-2011) and Victoria (2011-2014). Hodges was drafted by Florida in the third round (84th overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft.

Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar on Thursday agreed to an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"We are pleased to have reached a contract agreement with MacKenzie," Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said. "He is a young and mobile defenseman with an offensive upside, who will continue to grow and develop at the professional level."

Weegar, 20, had 12 goals and 59 points in 61 regular-season games with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to rank fourth among league defensemen. He helped Halifax reach the QMJHL semifinals, where they lost to eventual champion Val-d'Or Foreurs, scoring five goals and 22 points in the postseason.

A seventh-round pick (No. 206) of the Panthers in the 2013 NHL Draft, Weegar had eight goals and 44 points in 62 games to help lead Halifax to the Memorial Cup in 2012-13. He attended training camp with the Panthers in 2013 and had an assist in one preseason game against the Nashville Predators.

Florida Panthers Executive Vice President and General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to an entry-level contract with F Rocco Grimaldi.

Grimaldi, 21, most recently led the University of North Dakota to the NCAA Frozen Four semifinals. He was named MVP of the NCAA Midwest Regional after leading UND past both Wisconsin and Ferris State. The Rossmoor, CA native completed the 2013-2014 season placing first among all UND players in goals (17) and assists (22).

“We are very pleased to have reached a contract agreement with Rocco,” said Tallon. “He is a hard working forward who possesses speed along with great vision on the ice. We look forward to his continued growth and development within our organization.”

During his freshman season at UND (2012-2013), Grimaldi was selected to the ALL-WCHA Rookie Team and placed third nationally recording 36 points (13-23-26) in 40 games played. For his career at North Dakota, the forward played in 86 games recording 77 points (31-46-77).

On the international level, Grimaldi won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2013 World Junior Championship, scoring the game-winner in the championship game against Sweden. He also won a gold medal at the 2010 Under-18 World Championship.

Grimaldi was drafted by Florida with their second choice (33rd overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft.

The Florida Panthers hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NHL draft, but possibly not for much longer.

During a radio interview Thursday on Sportsnet 590 The Fan, Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said that he "definitely will" shop this year's top pick.

"I'm open for business," Tallon said when asked about his willingness to deal the No. 1 pick. "You have three options: you either take it, move back or trade it. So that's what we're looking at. What's the best deal for our future, that's the key."

The Panthers' readiness to trade the first overall pick shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone given that the team previously traded away the No. 1 pick in both 2002 and 2003.

The only time the Panthers held onto the No. 1 selection was in 1993, when they drafted defenseman and current team captain Ed Jovanovski.

After finishing the 2013-14 season with a 29-45-8 record, it's clear that the Panthers have many needs, and trading the coveted No. 1 pick for multiple assets or additional picks could expedite the team's rebuild.

There is no consensus No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft; Kingston Frontenacs center Sam Bennett and Barrie Colts defenseman Aaron Ekblad are thought to be this year's top skaters, but neither are viewed as generational talents.

Given their already abundant crop of young talent and the lack of certainty in this year's top picks, trading the No. 1 selection may be the best course of action if the Panthers hope to live up to owner Vincent Viola's "win now" mentality.

At the 2013 draft, the Panthers shocked fans by selecting forward Aleksander Barkov with the second-overall pick instead of highly touted defenseman Seth Jones.

In his rookie season, Barkov recorded eight goals and 16 assists in an injury-shortened season that lasted 54 games. He is projected to be the team's first-line center heading into next season.

The 2014 draft will be held June 27-28 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon, looking to add toughness on the ice, signed hard-nosed forward Connor Brickley to a two-year, two-way, entry-level contract Monday.

Brickley, 22, the 50th overall pick by the Panthers in the 2010 draft, was a standout at the University of Vermont where he compiled 48 points, including 21 goals, in 117 games over four seasons.

"Thank you everyone for the continued support and extremely happy to be a part of the @FlaPanthers organization," Brickley tweeted via his @ConnorBrickley handle.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Brickley, a native of Everett, Mass., had 15 points in 35 games this season for Vermont, and then joined the Panthers AHL affiliate in San Antonio where he notched a goal and an assist in eight games.

"He played well in San Antonio,'' Tallon said recently. "It's good to see. He's a hard-nosed kid that hits hard and skates hard. He's going to be a guy who fills a great role and a great need for our franchise, a guy with some tremendous hitting ability and with a lot of inspiration, desire and spirit.''

Tallon confirmed that former Flyers and Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette is on his extensive list of potential coaching candidates to become the franchise’s 13th coach. Laviolette, 49, coached the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup championship in 2006 and the Flyers to the Eastern Conference championship in 2010.

He also said that recently fired Predators coach Barry Trotz, a mentor of Horachek’s who phoned him before and after his meeting with Tallon, is, “a hell of a coach.’’ Another potential candidate could include former Lightning coach Guy Boucher, who led Tampa to the Eastern Conference finals in his first season in 2011.
